Obituary for Russell Harrington Sr.

Russell Harrington Sr.
Bangor - Russell K. Harrington Sr., 90, a gentleman and a gentle man, passed quietly and peacefully in his sleep the morning of Monday July 17, 2017 in Bangor. He was blessed with only a brief period of declining health due to Parkinson's disease and dementia. He took his last walk with his son the evening before his death and his daughter was with him the morning of his passing.

Russell was born in North Sullivan, ME on September 14, 1926, the third of four children to parents Mark L. & Alice M. (Bunker) Harrington. His childhood and young adulthood was spent in Cherryfield, ME where he attended local schools. He served proudly but spoke little about his service to his country aboard the Naval air craft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga during World War II. After his service he returned to Cherryfield. On September 26, 1948 he and his wife Phyllis (Curtis) were married in her hometown of Harrington.

Soon after marriage they moved to Bangor and in 1953 they established their family home on Vine Street where they raised their children and where they lived for 50 years. Russell had a varied career in the Bangor area including employment at Hammond Shoe Company, Hughes Brothers, the U. S. Postal Service, and Timberland Machines. During the mid 1960's Russell and Phyllis owned a Montgomery Ward catalog store on Central Street. In the late 50's/early 60's he owned and operated a Cities Service/Citgo service station on Exchange Street until Urban Renewal took the property. The work that he was proudest of and that gave him the greatest satisfaction was carpentry. He worked in numerous homes throughout the Bangor area over the course of more than 30 years. He most enjoyed his retirement years continuing to work on properties that his son owned. His greatest pleasure was helping his son and Walter with a complete restoration of their historic home in Bangor and their coastal cottage in Harrington. There was nothing he couldn't repair, renovate, or restore. He learned his gifts and inherited his talents from his father and great-grandfather.

Russell was a devoted member and active parishioner at Hammond Street Congregational Church in Bangor for over 60 years. He looked forward to dressing well in clothes his children bought him and attending Sunday service regularly.

Russell is survived by Phyllis, his wife of 68 years, his son Russell Jr. of Bangor and his partner for life Walter Gary who Russell loved as another son, his daughter Rhonda, his most beloved twin grandsons Curtis Harrington Cashell and Cameron Russell Cashell, and their father Timothy Cashell all of N. Yarmouth, ME. He is also survived by many devoted and loving nieces and nephews, his wife's siblings who he loved as his own, Elmer Curtis of CA, Doris Vose of Harrington, and Joyce Bousquet of FL. as well as many very caring friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Leroy Harrington, his sisters Thelma Smith and Evelyn Dorr and their spouses. He was also predeceased by his wife's parents Ralph & Frances Curtis who loved him as a son, a very special brother-in-law Lowell Vose Jr. as well as two nephews Leroy (Lee) Harrington and Michael Foster.

Russell lived a full and happy life and we were blessed to have him for so long. He would say his greatest joy in life was time spent with his family who brought him great pride and joy. The void he leaves can never be filled as is the case when there is deep and abiding love in a family. We will miss him greatly until we see his sweet smile once again.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5-7:00 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017 at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor where a funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor immediately following the service. Interment to follow the reception at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.

Those wishing to remember Russell in a special way may make gifts in his memory to a memorial building fund to be established in his name at Hammond Street Congregational Church, P. O. Box 1106, Bangor, ME 04402-1106. Gifts should be made payable to Hammond Street Congregational Church. Condolences to the family may be expressed at
