Obituary for Barbara Frederick (Bewley)

Barbara Frederick (Bewley)
Orono – Barbara Bewley Frederick, 55, of Orono, Maine, died September 10, 2017, at Eastern Maine Medical Center after battling cancer for the past four months. She was born on February 12, 1962 to Doris M. and A. Lloyd Bewley in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She was well known for her compassion and cheerful smile, something that was rooted in her Christian faith. She grew up going to the Conestoga Church of the Brethren, attended summer camp at Camp Swatara and the National Youth Conference in Colorado. She enjoyed camping with her family at the New Jersey shore and with the Girl Scouts. While in scouts, she earned her Gold Award. An avid reader, she graduated in 1980 from Conestoga Valley High School, 3rd in her class and a National Merit Scholar. Barbara majored in Chemistry at Juniata College and graduated in 1984. She committed the next year to the Brethren Volunteer Service, doing office work, cooking and cleaning at Ascension School, an Episcopal summer camp in a remote area of eastern Oregon. She married Brian Gerrish Frederick on August 8, 1987, and moved to Ithaca, NY, to support him while he completed his Ph.D at Cornell. They began to understand God’s purpose in their lives through their experiences in the Presbyterian church in Ithaca. After moving to Liverpool in 1991, where Brian was working as a post-doc, they continued their walk with God as a part of the Church of England. They travelled throughout Britain and the European continent, often with family who were visiting. She particularly enjoyed the English Lakes, historical cities, and cathedrals that they encountered in their travels. Their two sons, David and Nathan, were born in Liverpool. The new family of four moved to Orono in 1998, where Barbara would become the loving mother and homemaker that she was so well known for. She was always eager to hear her sons’ stories when they returned from school, camping trips, sporting events, and college. Barbara was meticulous when it came to small details, a skill she honed as an analytical chemist working at Lancaster Laboratories, the Food Science lab at Cornell, and an archeological radio-isotope lab at Liverpool University. She has worked in a wide variety of teaching and research roles, most recently as laboratory supervisor in the organic chemistry program at the University of Maine. Her accuracy and precision transcended labwork, as she applied it to her software programming business, volunteer accounting work, and her needlework. She frequently edited her husband’s scientific writing and emails to improve simplicity and clarity! Barbara volunteered for over 15 years as an adult leader in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as Den Leader and Assistant Scoutmaster. She assisted with committee work, and participated in camping trips, to include a week-long canoe trip through the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Barbara left this life as a loving mother and devoted wife, and will always be remembered by her friends and family for her kind smile and willingness to lend an ear. Barbara is survived by husband Brian, sons David and Nathan, parents Doris and Lloyd Bewley of Iowa City, IA, brother J. Michael (Jan) Bewley of Strasburg, PA and sister Beth (Tom) Randall of Iowa City, IA. Funeral services will be held 11:00am Saturday, Sept. 16, at New Hope Church, at the Penobscot Christian School, 1423 Ohio Street in Bangor, with Pastor Jonathan Fischer officiating. An informal service will be held Sunday afternoon, Sept.24th, at Conestoga Church, Leola, PA, with Pastor Del Keeney facilitating. Donations in memory of Barbara may be made to the New Hope Church Benevolent Fund, 157 Park St., Bangor ME 04401; the Katahdin Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, PO Box 1869, Bangor, ME 04402; or to the hospice organization in your local area.
