Ruth Stearns (Good)
Ruth G. Stearns, 103, died Thursday, Aug.23, 2018, at a rest home in Dover-Foxcroft. The daughter of Lee C. Good and LulaMae (Rideout) Good, Ruth was born in Monticello on Aug. 9, 1915. From the start she exhibited a lot of spirit and vinegar to make her way as the middle child of five siblings.
She graduated from Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton, in 1933 and advanced to the Maine School of Commerce in Bangor and earned her BS degree from Husson College, Bangor.
A year was spent in New York City with the Pat Rooney Produce Company but homesickness for Maine brought her back. She got a job teaching in Danforth in 1935, where she noted the students were nearly the same age as the young teacher that stood before them. A year later she began teaching at Hampden Academy, where she met the son of the family with whom she lodged and future husband, Louis C. Stearns 3d. The couple were married September 4th 1940 in Hampden.
She resumed in 1962 an active schedule at Hampden Academy teaching business courses. She moved out of teaching in 1975 after receiving her master’s degree in counseling from the University of Maine and worked at the Academy for five years as guidance counselor, retiring in the spring of 1980.
She was active in many organizations that expressed her sociability and interest in people, especially young people. She was a lifelong member of the Shakespeare Club in Bangor, a member of the Bangor Junior League, the Maine Teacher’s Association, the Hampden VFW Auxiliary, worked as member of the Penobscot Chapter of the Girl Scouts and on the Hampden Voter Registration Board. She has been a member for many years of the Church of the Open Door, Hampden.
She loved to travel. Those dreams were realized in later years with trips to Germany, Alaska, Canada and across the United States in a pop-up camper. Several winters were spent at Ft. Myers with her sister Audrey and many an April vacation at Sanibel Island with her husband, Lou.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband in 1989, her brothers, Garth Good, Lawrence Good and Herschel Good and her sister, Audrey Good Fisher.
She is survived by daughters, Linda R. Stearns and husband, Thomas H. Bartlett of Bangor, Mary S. Hubbell and husband, Thomas, and son, Paul A. Stearns and his wife, Melissa of Guilford.
She is also survived by grandchildren, Shawn Corey Bryce and her husband, Robert of Hagerstown MD, Kimberly Corey of Bangor, Samantha Taber and her husband, Christopher Leonards, of Berlin, Germany, Tristan Taber and his companion, Katrina Schweikert of Hallowell.
