Obituary for Idella Bertha Peary (Curtis)

Print
LEVANT – Idella Bertha (Curtis) Peary, 96, went to be with her Lord, November 22, 2018, at a Bangor hospital. She was born May 5, 1922, in Caribou, the daughter of Nathan and Josephine (Searles) Curtis.

Early in life, Idella attended Perham public schools. Following school, she worked in private homes. Idella also lived and worked in Connecticut for a short period. Moving back to Maine, she worked in the Caribou bag factory, met and married her husband, and eventually moved to a farm in Levant. While living in Levant, she worked a year for the Levant Consolidated School. After leaving the school, she worked for the following businesses: Quality Bakery, King Cole Potato Chip, Kagan Lown Shoe, and then retired from the Old Town Shoe Factory. She was a longtime member of the Minerva Grange, Harvest Chapel of Levant, formerly, Levant Village Baptist Church, and the local senior citizens group. Idella’s world revolved around her family, and she loved each and every one of them. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting, cooking, traveling, painting/teaching ceramics, and playing games with the children.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Peary; a step-mother, Dora Curtis; daughters, Lorena Sandstrom, and Nadine Peary; sons-in-law, Maynard Sandstrom, and Gerard Despres; siblings, Mildred Woods and husband, John, Roseanna Humphrey and husband, Milford, Clyde Curtis, Elmer Curtis and wife, Verna; a brother-in-law, Joseph Morin; nephews-in-law, Charles Pike, Peter Cook, Thomas Somers, Darryl Peary, Wayne Hale, and Everett Lidstone; and a grandson-in-law, Clem Blakney. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Despres; a son, Nathan Peary and wife, Sherry; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Coroniti, Ella Morin, Esther Hardgrove and husband, Leslie; brothers, Maynard Curtis and wife, Sharon, Frederick Curtis, and Emery Curtis and wife, Juanita; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to recognize the many family and friends who visited and helped care for Idella.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 1-3 p.m., Saturday, December 8, 2018, at the Harvest Chapel of Levant, 3531 Union Street, Levant, where a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, with light refreshments following. Private interment will be in Waugh Cemetery, Levant, in the spring. Those wishing to remember Idella in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Levant Fire Department, PO Box 220, Levant, ME 04456. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
