Obituary

HERMON – Ashel William “Ace” MacDonald, 87, passed away May 9, 2019, after a brief illness. He was born December 1, 1931, in Eddington, the son of LeRoy G. and Ida E. (Piper) MacDonald.

Ace graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1950. Following graduation, he served in the United States Air Force, stationed at Loring Air Force Base. Ace attended Wentworth Institute of Massachusetts, earning a degree in Steam and Diesel Engineering. He worked various jobs as a mechanic until he started at Maine Central Railway, where he worked for 30+ years, retiring in 1993. Ace’s passion was harness racing. He owned multiple horses with his brother, LeRoy Jr. and father. In Ace’s younger years, he was a Boy Scout, which led to his love of the outdoors. Ace was an avid hunter and fisherman. He used to trap beaver with Leroy Jr., and his brother-in-law, Clarence Faulkner. Ace was a member of the United States Trotting Association, the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association, and Vice-President of the Downeast Harness Horsemen’s Association.

In addition to his parents, Ace was predeceased by siblings, Vinetta M. Swisher, Ora L. Hook, Irene E. Faulkner, and LeRoy G. MacDonald Jr. He is survived by two sons, William K. MacDonald, Christopher R. MacDonald and wife, Linda K.; three granddaughters, Elasah A., Anna K., Abigail R.; siblings, Edward L. MacDonald and wife, Doris; Richard B. MacDonald and wife, Peggy; a special caregiver and friend, Danielle Beale; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at North Brewer Cemetery, Day Road, Brewer, at a date and time to be determined, later in the spring. Those wishing to remember Ace in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
