Obituary

Carmel
Allan Judson McGown, died at his home on Mt. Laurel Lane in Carmel on February 15, 2020, after spending several days enjoying the care and company of family and friends. He leaves o legacy of devotion to family; a fierce belief in self-reliance and hard work; a commitment to friendship and service; and a gratefulness for a life well lived.

Born in Carmel on September 30, 1933, Allan grew up on his family farm developing a lifelong interest in agriculture with the guidance of his parents Mark and Hester Carter McGown. After graduating from Carmel High School, in 1952, he attended the University of Maine earning a degree in animal husbandry. He joined the United States Army in 1954, serving in Alaska where he made life long friends. In 1957 he enlisted in the Maine State Police serving until February,1980, when he retired as a corporal. Following retirement Allan became the General Manager of Tom Sawyer, Inc. until 1990.

In 1960, he married Lorraine Thomas. They forged a loving partnership for over sixty years. Together they created homes in Carmel and “Listed Off”, in Spruce Head. Each home reflected an exceptional sense of style and design.

Allan was the proud and devoted father to his son, Jeffrey and wife, Janey of Norridgewock; his daughter Kristi of Carmel; his grandchildren, Thomas and Stephanie of Carmel; and Kathryn and Dan of Durham and their mother, Susan of Orrington. Ellie and Gracie, his great granddaughters, brought a special twinkle to his eye. What memories they have of his faithfulness to each of them. Not to be forgotten is Finn, always by his side. Allan had many nieces and nephews among the McGown and Thomas clans. Candy, Mark, Rodney, and their families were also his neighbors.

Never an enthusiast of idle hands, Allan was known for tackling any project with gusto. He could create, build, or repair almost anything, a standard bearer of hard work and Yankee ingenuity. Plowing snow, planting and tending a garden, cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood, were all part of an enjoyable day for him.

From his Thomas family, Allan inherited a love of the ocean. He spent many hours aboard TOMKAT lobstering and clamming the waters and shores around Spruce Head. His catch of the day was enjoyed by many when he hosted “Cousins Day” and reunions with classmates. In addition to time spent at Spruce Head, Allan had hunting, fishing, cribbage and golfing companions with whom he enjoyed a good story, a good-hearted prank, or a toast to time with a friend.

Allan was active in many service organizations. He was a trustee of the Carmel Union Congregational Church; a member and past master of Benevolent Lodge #87 AF & AM of Carmel, Anah Shriners, an Aide Emeritus and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters #150. He belonged to Eastern Maine Senior Golf Association. Each organization was the beneficiary of Allan’s willingness to do for others and generosity with his time and talents.

Allan was predeceased by his parents, Mark and Hester Carter McGown; his sister, Dorothy Verrill; and Russell and Helen Thomas.

Relatives and friends are invited to call 6pm to 8 pm Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:45 pm by the officers and members of Benevolent Lodge. # 87 AF & AM of Carmel. A celebration of his life will be held 11 am Friday, February 21, 2020 with the Rev. Mark E. Rustin, pastor of the Carmel Union Congregational Church and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine, officiating The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor, following the service,

Allan was one of a kind! He was a gentle, kind, and strong man. He was always positive, quiet to say anything bad about anyone. He was always ready to help, volunteer for any job no matter how hard. He was a police officer who with his power it never went to his head. He was more than fair with everyone and giving the young boys and girls a talking to and most of the time it worked – that is what made his career a great success! He was married to Lorraine for many years and had two great children. He was Past Master of the benevolent lodge # 87 and it did a lot of work on the Lodge Hall back in the 70s and 80s. I first knew Allan back in kindergarten at about the age of 5 - that was over 80 years ago and I know God didn’t make many Allan Judson McGown’s in today’s world! You will be greatly missed.

Heart broken, but, we all all heading toward this, inescapable end. Allan, I don 't know which one of you, Ralph or you set the alarm clock out for you to run to heaven (this is a story from Ralph and Allan's old SP days in the I) - but for sure, you two are now together again! My heart aches for Lorraine, Jeff, Kristie, all the Grands, Greats and so many more! I am more than thankful and believe it was God's plan, you, Lorraine and I got to hug each other again last fall. That, we all, (you and Lorraine) got to meet again and you got to meet Pete. I have many fond memories of hunting on your land, sharing fun times and all the stories Ralph told of your old MSP days. I think the funniest one was of him sharing an old tarp with you for use camping and he had picked it up off the Interstate. When you went to use it - it had advertising on the side for either a forestry company or a trucking company and you were fit to kill him LOL! The fun stories he shared about you guys during those years are forever and clearly engraved on my heart, Lorraine and family, my heart is broken, as another of Ralph's really closest friends, and one I got to know, is now gone! Blessings to you all. Please keep in touch - our reunion last fall was meant to be. RIP dear friend - And give my Ralph an embrace for me - let him know I am OK! Until we all meet again!
